Suggested edit: John Blue joined Company I, 196th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on March 13, 1865 for a one-year service. He stated his age as 18 even though his age was actually 17 (younger than was acceptable for military service). It was a common practice during the Civil War for young men to claim to be 18 even though they were younger so they would be accepted by the recruiter. While at Camp Chase, Ohio, the 196th Ohio Infantry had the reputation of being a very well-drilled and well-disciplined unit and the boys were particularly proud of that. They did not participate in any battles with the Confederates, but during the months of their service were used to guard several military installation in and around Baltimore, Maryland, primarily Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island.
Since the war came to an end less than a month (April 9, 1865) after he had joined, John was mustered out of service on August 31, 1865 at Baltimore, Maryland. He apparently returned to his home in Monroe County, Ohio where he married, raised a son and lived out a productive life.
