Union Civil War Veteran Soldier. A native of Germany, he was the son of Christopher and Elizabeth Gieske. He emigrated to America and first settled in Switzerland County, Indiana near Vevay. He later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and during the Civil War he answered Governor Brough's call for volunteers and enlisted to serve in the Union Army with the 165th Ohio National Guard Infantry. Gieske was mustered in as a Private in Company E.
