This young couple chose Easter Sunday, April 13,1952, to start their married life together. They were married at Northside Baptist Church, Calhoun Falls, SC, but little did they know that their wedding day would have a tragic end.
Planning to have a reception after thier honeymoon, the young couple changed out of their wedding attire and proceeded toward Anderson, SC on SC Hwy 81. Within 15 minutes of this young couple being united in marriage, they were invovled in a tragic car accident that took both of their lives.
As was the custom during that time period, family members and friends were following the couple as they embarked on their wedding trip, witnessing the tragedy just minutes after they had witnessed the joyous union of this couple in marriage.
Mr. & Mrs. Powell were buried in their wedding attire and are buried in the cemetery across from where the accident took place.
