Canton – Hilda Mae "Sissy" Pope, 87, of the Beaverdam community, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, April 24, 2017, while at Smoky Mountain Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born November 20, 1929, in the Dutch Cove community, to the late F.W. "France" Pope and the late Floy Delena Clontz Pope, for whom she was a caregiver for many years. She aided in the care of her "Daddy" after he was impaired by Parkinson's disease and strokes until his death in 1976. Sissy continued to live with her mother until "Mommy" passed away in 1998 at age 97 due to complications from diabetes and congestive heart failure.

Sissy was the fourth of nine children, and was preceded in death by her brothers, L.G., Glenn, Earl and Charles. She is survived by her sisters, Helen Foster and Nancy Pressley and husband, Wade, of Canton; brothers; Robert and wife Helen Pope of Hephzibah, Georgia, and Frank and wife, Carolyn Pope, of Candler; and sister-in-law, Betty Pope, of Canton. She was proud of her numerous nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. Sissy is also survived by several cousins and friends.

In addition to helping care for her parents, she also spent time working at Bucky's Drive-in, Champion Paper and Fibre Company, and she retired from Crawford's Nursing Home as a nurses' assistant. In recent years, Sissy worked with the Senior Companion Program of Mountain Projects, Inc., providing companionship and transportation to her sister Helen. They were often seen at Big Lots, the Dollar stores, Goodwill, Sherrill's Pioneer Restaurant, and the "beauty shop" among other places.

Sissy was a member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church in Canton, and enjoyed attending whenever she was able. The family appreciates that her pastor, Reverend Melissa Lowe, visited her while she was in the hospital. The family would also like to thank the staff at Haywood Regional Medical Center including the Progressive Care Unit and physicians, for their patience and care during her most recent hospital stay, which saw her face several challenging illnesses.

Although Sissy came to refer to herself as an "Old Maid," she will be missed by many family members who loved her and helped care for her, and many who spent numerous Sunday dinners at the family home while growing up, visiting at Christmas, or just dropping by. We are comforted in knowing her salvation was secure in Jesus and that she is no longer tired or in pain.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Chris Willett officiating. Burial followed at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beaverdam United Methodist Church, 80 Rice Cove Road, Canton, NC 28716.
