Ambrose was born in the Summers District of Caldwell County, the 11th of 13 children born to Marvel Hise and wife Mary (Bradshaw) who had been married in Burke County in 1836. His father was a farmer.
About 1865 Marvel departed the family to take up with a young woman in Tennessee. Ambrose and the 3 other younger siblings were left with their mother. In 1870 Abrose was a farm laborer, age 15, with this family remnant in the Summers District.
About 1874 he married the 22-year-old Mary Ann West. No marriage record is found, however. The couple took up farming in the Little River Township and there raised 5 sons and 2 daughters to adulthood. Ambrose continued working his farm well into his sixties. He died at home of diabetes paralysis. Mary Ann lived on into 1922.
