About 1865 Marvel departed the family to take up with a young woman in Tennessee. Ambrose and the 3 other younger siblings were left with their mother. In 1870 Abrose was a farm laborer, age 15, with this family remnant in the Summers District.
About 1874 he married the 22-year-old Mary Ann West. No marriage record is found, however. The couple took up farming in the Little River Township and there raised 5 sons and 2 daughters to adulthood. Ambrose continued working his farm well into his sixties. He died at home of diabetes paralysis. Mary Ann lived on into 1922.
