OPELOUSAS - A Homegoing Celebration will be held for Rev. John Ezekiel Claiborne at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Community Chapel Church of God in Christ of Opelousas, LA where Rev. Frank Ford is Pastor. Rev. John Ezekiel Claiborne, 91, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at his residence in Opelousas, LA. Interment will be at Bellevue Memorial Cemetery in Opelousas, LA. Rev. Earl Williams, Jr. of Galilee Baptist Church of Shreveport, LA, will be officiating at the funeral service.

Rev. Claiborne was a member of Born Again To Live Church of Opelousas, LA, Frontier's International Association, St. Landry Parish Retired Teachers' Association and National Rifle Association. Rev., (Private First Class), Claiborne was honorably discharged on March 13, 1946 from the United States Army. He was qualified as a Sharpshooter expert and has several decorations/citations: EAME Campaign Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon and two Overseas services Bars. Rev., (PFC), Claiborne served in the Rhineland Campaign commonly known as the Battle of the Bulge. Rev. Claiborne received U.S. patent number 3,250,652 titled "Exothermic Composition Containing Zinc and Ammonia Chloride" on May 10, 1966. He also taught math, science, special education and coached basketball in the St. Landry Parish public school system for over 30 years. He loved gardening, collecting things, ministering to the young, and taking care of his wife of 63 years.

Rev. Claiborne leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Catherine "Sis" Savant Claiborne of Opelousas, LA; three sons, John Claiborne II (Connie) of Baton Rouge, LA, Jarvis J. Claiborne (Christina) of Opelousas, LA and Tony Claiborne (Tracy) of New Orleans, LA; one spiritually adopted son, Sebie Dayon of Opelousas, LA; five daughters, Cathleen Claiborne of Tulsa, OK, Cathy Ncube (Matoteng) of Pensacola, FL, Parthenia Antoine (Gregory) of Fort Worth, TX, Cynthia Claiborne of Roanoke, TX and Carla Bradford (Jerome) of Greenville, SC; 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Rev. Claiborne was preceded in death by his parents, Ezekiel Claiborne and Parthenia Towner Claiborne and his sister, Leola Carhee.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Community Chapel Church of God in Christ.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Claiborne Health Talent Research Institute at American Bank and Trust Company in Opelousas, Louisiana.
