Paul X. Ackerman, Jr., age 63, passed away peacefully on Friday evening, November 20, 2015 at his home in Brown County.

Paul was born August 20, 1952, in Camp Atterbury to Paul X. and Lois A (Dowell) Ackerman Sr. He was a 1971 graduate of Martinsville High School and went on to study English at Indiana University.

Paul was proud to serve his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Marine Corps. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was also a drill instructor while at Parris Island, South Carolina. During his service, he was part of their High Power Rifle team. He was on the National Championship Team for two years, achieving three National Records with his service rifle. He was also recognized by President Gerald Ford for his expert marksmanship.

Paul enjoyed watching NASCAR, philosophical reading and traveling. One of his favorite memories was taking a road trip out west with his son and his band.

His family and friends loved spending time and learning from Paul. His laid back, easy going, and gentle personality were a natural attraction to many. He taught his children to work hard and to have faith that, regardless of the situation, everything would work out. It was important that his family understands that most things in life could be handled with just the right presentation.

Paul had lifelong ties to Brown County and built his home himself there on the land that has been in his family for four generations. His creative side led him to creating woodworking and metal projects for his family.

Paul's true passion was his family. He was a devoted father, brother, and son and will be missed by his mother, Lois Ackerman of Brown County; children, Marcia (Peter) Kalat of California, Paula (Andrew) Zurbuch of Bloomington, Paul Ackerman III, of Bloomington, Ashley (Aaron) Chandler of Brown County, and Carie (Cory) Kelsheimer of Terre Haute; sister, Debra (Mike) Fishel of Martinsville, 9 grandchildren, and a large loving extended family.

Paul was preceded in death by his father.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25th followed by military rites presented by the Brown County Honor Guard at Meredith - Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 24th at the funeral home.
