Hamilton County Coroner, Physician, Surgeon, Union Civil War Surgeon. Born near Hardin, Shelby County, Ohio, he studied medicine under Dr. Henry Smith Conklin in Sidney, Ohio. He graduated with honors from the Medical College of Ohio in Cincinnati in 1852 and briefly became a resident physician at the Commercial Hospital and Lunatic Asylum. He opened an office in Cincinnati and began a private practice while also demonstrating anatomy lessons at the Medical College of Ohio. In 1857, he was elected as Coroner of Hamilton County and remained in that position for a couple of years. After the Civil War began, he was appointed and commissioned as Surgeon with the 48th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was assigned to duty at Camp Dennison and organized a post hospital. After assisting with the organization of several regiments he was transferred to active field duty and sent with his regiment to the Western Theatre. During the Battle of Shiloh at Pittsburg Landing, he was captured by Confederates on April 6, 1862. He was paroled in July, 1862, and sent back to Ohio. He was reassigned to Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio and served as Post Surgeon until October, 1862. He was then ordered to join the army again at Fort Pickering, Tennessee and participated in the Vicksburg Campaign. He resigned his commission for a brief period, reapplied, and was assigned to Woodward Post Hospital in Cincinnati for the remainder of the war. In 1865, he was reelected as Hamilton County Cornoner. In 1867, he was elected as a member of the Board of Directors at Longview Hospital and Asylum. He continued to serve at various positions in Cincinnati until he died in Cincinnati in 1901 when he was 69 years old.
