James Waite Mahoney, died February 2, 2007 at Tucson Medical Center after a brief illness. Born July 3, 1930 to Audrey Waite Mahoney and Mildred Flood Mahoney in St. Louis, Missouri, he moved with the family in 1937 to a farm outside Argos, Indiana. He attended Argos High School and Indiana University, and received his Ph.D. from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts University), in 1957, after which he joined the Foreign Service. He served in Vientiane, Laos, in economic development, and later as Chief Political Officer in the US Consulate in Calcutta, India. In 1964 he left the Foreign Service and joined General Mills, Minneapolis, responsible for acquisition and development of foreign subsidiaries, including living two years in Nantes, France. He was then transferred to the General Mills European headquarters in London. He married Dhira (Dee) Bapat in 1970. In 1975 the couple returned to the US to settle in Tucson, where James attended the University of Arizona Law School, being admitted to the Bar in 1983. he practiced as an attorney, chiefly juvenile law, till 2003. In addition he was active in establishing and developing the Juvenile Law section of the State Bar of Arizona, served on the Board of the Asian Art Circle of the Phoenix Art Museum, and endowed an organ scholarship in memory of his mother at the University of Arizona Music School. He was a lover of classical music, especially opera, and all his life was a devotee of the arts in general, and a supporter of the environment. He is survived by his wife, Dhira, his brother Donald (Nancy) Mahoney of Argos, Indiana, sister-in-law Ursula Mahoney of Nashville, and many nephews and nieces. He will be sorely missed. A memorial celebrating his life will be scheduled, date to be announced.
