US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of Colorado's 3rd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1979 until 1985. Born to parents of Slovenian descent, his father was a steel worker. After graduating from Pueblo Catholic High School, he studied at Pueblo Junior College and later at Adams State College, from where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1964. He worked for the Pueblo County Clerk's Office, eventually becoming Chief Deputy County Clerk and later was a paralegal aide for a law firm. He began his association with the political arena, when he was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives (1968 to 1974) and followed this with holding office in the Colorado State Senate from 1970 to 1978. He rose to Senate Majority Leader in 1973. He chose not to run for reelection in 1984 and after leaving Congress, he established his own lobbying firm.
