Union Civil War Officer. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, moved west and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. Guthrie organized the 1st Kentucky Volunteer Infantry in June of 1861 at Camp Clay in Pendleton, Ohio. The Regiment was composed entirely of Ohio men and performed much valuable service in the early engagements of the war in western Virginia. Guthrie resigned in late 1861 and resumed his role as Captain of his militia company, the Fatigue Forces" as part of the Defense of Cincinnati and they put in much of their work at Covington and Newport. He offered his services to the staff of General Lew Wallace in September of 1862 when Cincinnati was under the threat of a Confederate invasion. He died in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1906 a day before he would have been 66 years old.
