Richard Bennetts, widely known and revered Cedar Ridge resident since 1944, died at 2 o’clock last Saturday afternoon, October 20 in his 78th year and after a full and active life.

Funeral services will be held at the Hooper-Weaver Mortuary at 10:30 o’clock tomorrow morning,October 23, with Rev. Donald Getty of the First Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood.

Bennetts was born in Cornwall, England in 1873. At the age of two and one half years he was brought by his parents to the United States, arriving at Eureka, Humboldt county in a sailing ship.

At the age of 19 an adventurous spirit sent him to the gold mines at Angels Camp and from there he proceeded to the roaring camp of Bodie on the east side of the Sierras.

Retracing his steps as millwright, carpenter, mine, locomotive engineer, Bennetts returned to the Mother Lode, then to Eureka in 1922 where he constructed a number of houses and in 1944 moved to Cedar Ridge Drive.

He was a popular woodworker in redwood, manzanita and pines. He also indicated the same success in his garden upkeep and productivity that characterized his vocational work earlier in life.

Bereaved are a daughter, Mrs. Florence R. Averell, Los Angeles; a sister, Mrs. Anna Coffer of Grass Valley, whose son was buried this morning and three grandchildren.
