Lorrin was born in Washington Twp., Pottawattamie Co., rural Carson, IA on September 12, 1924 the son of Orrin Quincy and Sadie Elizabeth (Georing) Matthews. He survived polio as a young boy and attended rural schools in Washington Twp. He began working on the farm at a young age and on July 25, 1948 he married Phyllis Lorraine Core at Carson. While continuing to farm he did mechanical work for others including the 7-UP company. He later worked for Acme Body Shop in South Omaha for 25 years and retired from there still living on the family farm. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby and for a time served as Justice of the Peace for Pottawattamie County. Following the death of his wife on December 21, 1999, he made his home with his two daughters until entering the nursing home last July.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brothers Donald and Charles Matthews and his sister Ruby Bailey.
Survivors include his daughters Shirley (Irvin) Shanno of Oakland, and Peggy (Ben) Morris of Crescent, IA; his sons Kenny Matthews of Oakland and Bobby Matthews of Council Bluffs, IA; his 5 grandchildren; his 8 great-grandchildren and his twin brother Orrin (Barbara) Matthews of Carson, IA. Also surviving are his sister-in-law June Matthews of Carson, his brother-in-law Donnie (Janice) Core of AZ, his sister-in-law Mary Jane Core of AZ and sister-in-law Betty Frieze of Council Bluffs, IA, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Oakland Christian Church at 1:00 PM. Burial of cremated remains will be held at a later date.
