Memorial Mass for Dr. Albert "Doc" Anthony Bettina, 91, of Portales, will be at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 20, 2012, at St. Helen Catholic Church with Rev. James McGowan as Celebrant.

Dr. Bettina was born on September 12, 1921, in DeKalb, Illinois to John and Antonia Bettina and died on September 17, 2012, at his home in Portales.


He graduated from DeKalb Township High School in 1939. After earning a Bachelor's degree in 1943 at Northern Illinois State Teachers College, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served three years with the Sixteenth Weather Squadron in the Yukon Territory of Alaska.


Upon completion of the Master's degree in 1948 at the Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado, he married Frances A. Hintz in Peoria, Illinois and moved to Portales to accept a position at Eastern New Mexico College.


He completed a Doctor's degree in Vocational Education in 1953 at Bradley University. Post-doctoral studies were pursued at the Universities of Missouri, Illinois, and Maryland.


Dr. Bettina retired at Eastern in 1982 as Dean Emeritus, the College of Education and Technology, after 34 years of service. During his tenure at Eastern, he served on several state boards and committees including the Trade and Industrial Advisory Committee, the Industrial Arts Advisory Committee, and the Professional Standards Commission. Professional recognition included; the President's Faculty Award, Friends of Eastern Distinguished Faculty Emeritus Award, ENMU Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award, New Mexico Vocational Education Hall of Fame, and the DECA Outstanding Service Award.


During a 17 year period as faculty athletic representative, he served on the district and national NAIA eligibility committees, including two years as chair of the of the latter. In 1982, he was installed into the NAIA Hall of Fame followed by the Greyhound Hall of Honors in 1986. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club. He participated at the Community Services Center providing income tax preparation service under the VITA and AARP Tax-Aid programs. Under the CSC-RSVP programs, he visited the elderly at home, in hospitals and in nursing homes. He was a member of the ENMU Foundation Board of Directors, the CSC Board, the New Mexico Association of Educational Retirees, AARP, the RGH Red Coat Volunteers, the Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion, and the Elks Lodge.

Dr. Bettina is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Frances A. Bettina in 2004. He is survived by his son, John Buster Bettina and wife, Glenda of Midland, Texas; his two daughters, Elizabeth Page and husband, Michael of Lovington and Cathy Truelock and husband, Terry of Portales; his seven grandchildren, Stephen and Christopher Bettina, Bryan and Amy Truelock, Ellen and Benjamin Page and Emily Page Smith. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Lucas Truelock and Regan Verespie.
