Frederick W., Sr. Frederick W. Wallner, Sr., 71, of Wethersfield, passed on to1 the Lord, Thursday, (Novem ber 4, 1999). Born April U, 1928 in Greenfield, MA he was the son of the late Carl and Elizabeth (Steinbacher) Wallner.
He played High School football, baseball and basketball and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
A graduate of Notre Dame, Class of 1951, he played guard and linebacker positions on the Fighting Irish's nationally acclaimed team.
He played under Coach Frank Leahy from 1948, 1949 and 1950 and was named All American. He signed with the Chica go Cardinals in 1951 and was named all pro in 1955.
Mr. Wallner's coaching career began at Marquette in 1956. He joined the Houston Oilers in 1960 as their first player coach later to take a job as the number one assistant coach with Tulane University.
From college coaching he moved up to the minor league coming to Connecticut to coach teams in Hartford, Waterbury and New Britain before joining the Hartford Knights Football Team. Fred Wallner was the Head Coach for the Hartford Knights when they were formed in 1968 to 1971 and was considered by many to be the finest head coach in minor league professional football. He was a member of the Notre Dame Alumni Association, the NFL player association and worked as a Financial Investment Advisor for many years before his retirement.
He is survived by three daughters, Jane W. Stockton of Jupiter, FL, Susan W. Stern and her husband Mario of West Hartford and Anne W. Green and her husband Gary of South Windsor; a son, Frederick W. Wallner, Jr. of Hartford; his special friend Guil- lermina Benejan, who was like another daughter to Fred; a brother, Carl P. Wallner of Rocky Hill; a sister, Anna Wallner of Greenfield, MA; several cousins in the Greenfield MA area; and a dear friend, Genevieve Toran-telli of Painted Post, NY. Funeral and burial are private at the convenience of the family, there are no calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 45 Wintonbury Avenue, Bloomfield, Ct. 06002. Funeral arrangements by the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, Wethersfield.
