Joe Fretwell was born to Willie and Getrude Fretwell in a small town called Walhalla, SC. At the age of 6 months the family moved to Oregon. Most of the members had already moved to the same area and were employees of the Railroad.

Joe met his wife of 74 years, Muriel J. (Russell) Fretwell and were married 24 Jun 1942 in Portland, Oregon. He entered the Armed Forces and performed his duty for his entire enlistment. He was a member of the First Special Forces and was stationed in Alaska, Vermont, Italy, Norway, among other places during WW II. He received an honorable discharge at separation and many honors and metals from foreign countries in thanks for his services to their people and freedoms.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel and 2 sons and 1 daughter and their spouses, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was greatly loved and we miss him.

Update 09Jun2022...
In July 2013, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded, collectively, to the First Special Service Force (FSSF) in recognition of its superior service during World War II. On February 3, 2015 surviving FSSF Veterans were in Washington DC to accept this momentous recognition on behalf of their fellow Forcemen who could not be there.
