Aletha K. Burgess, 87, of Wickenburg, died September 18 in St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, from a head injury suffered in a fall.
Mrs. Burgess was born April 18, 1904 in Parkston, South Dakota. She came to Arizona in 1946 with her husband, John Burgess, who preceded her in death in 1977.
Mrs. Burgess' life was dedicated to education, and she taught in Montana, South Dakota, Colorado, California and Arizona. She was one of the few women of her time who graduated from college and became a teacher.
After moving to Wickenburg, she and her husband built and operated the 67 Market and Café. Their business was one of the first on West Whipple Street, now West Wickenburg Way. They operated the business until her husband's death. The property is now owned and operated as La Casa Mia apartments, by their only daughter, Cheryl Burgess.
From 1950 through 1968 Mrs. Burgess was a teacher in the local area. She instructed four grades at one time in the elementary schools in Aguila, Wikieup and Congress.
She retired in 1968 to help raise her grandchildren and she lived to see her daughter and all three of her grandchildren graduate from college.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by three grandchildren, Steve Sorden of Tempe, Shauna Thomas of Yucca Valley, California and Staci Sorden of Phoenix. She is also survived by five great-grandsons.
There were no services. Burial was in the Wickenburg Cemetery, next to her husband.
