Called Jackie as a child and later Jack as an adult, he was raised by his grandmother Scythia (Carpenter) Goodpaster and aunt Lou (Goodpaster) Zook after the early death of his mother Nancy, only 16 days after he was born. He married first in 1900, Margaret V. O'Brien of St. Louis. After divorcing her, he met and married Teresa Mrovka, a young Polish Catholic girl from Collinsville, in 1911. He had two children with his first wife: Eleanor Goodpaster and James Marion Goodpaster; he had three children with his second wife: Walter Goodpaster, General Andrew J. Goodpaster, and Ila May (Goodpaster) Bruns.
