A native of Louisville Kentucky, and an ex-confederate soldier. Came to Tombstone, Arizona in the early 1880's, where he was in business for a number of years. He was influential, drawing men of capital to the Tombstone district. His later years were spent below town, on the Granite Wells ranch. He died there on September 26, 1913, age 73, leaving a widow and nine children.

Saturday—was Ex-Confederate Soldier The funeral of Captain J. J. McClelland, a
native of Louisville, KY, and an ex-Confederate soldier, who died at his home on
Granite Wells Ranch below Tombstone, at 11:30 o'clock Friday night, was held
Saturday from the home. He was one of the oldest residents of the Tombstone
mining district being 73 years of age and having come here in the early 80's.
The deceased was in business in Tombstone for a number of years and
influenced much capital to invest in this district. He was a man of fine character,
with a high sense of honor and true appreciation of and a deep affection for
his family and friends, a man of deep thought and progressive ideas. He
leaves to mourn his loss a widow and nine children, two sons, Dr. J. J.
McClelland of Anderson, Texas and Hunter H. McClelland, a lawyer of Mobile, Alabama
and seven daughters, three of whom are married and four with their mother at
the ranch. The Prospector joins the community in extending condolence to
the bereaved family.
