Lorraine M. Matousek, 84, of Grand Island died Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, surrounded by her loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. The Revs. Donald A. Buhrman and Mark A. Maresh will concelebrate, assisted by Deacon William Buchta. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.

Lorraine was born Nov. 13, 1932, at Elba, the daughter of Hubert and Anna (Ambrose) O’Neill.

Survivors of her immediate family include her husband of 59 years, Bert Matousek of Grand Island; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Ron and Barb Matousek of Omaha, Rick and Rhonda Matousek of Ogallala, Dan Matousek of Lincoln; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and David Hansmeyer of Firth; grandchildren and their spouses, Janelle and Kurt Nielsen, J.J. and Andrea Matousek, Andrea and Jeff Eastman, Matt Matousek, Gage Hansmeyer, Savannah Schmitt, Atlee Hansmeyer; 10 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Lee and Jim Logsdon of Lincoln; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mae and Frank Zimmerer of Billings, Mont.

Lorraine grew up in St. Libory until moving with her family to Grand Island in 1947. She completed her schooling at St. Mary’s, graduating from high school in 1950. She continued her schooling at Grand Island Beauty School. Lorraine worked as a cosmetologist for several years. She married Norbert L. “Bert” Matousek on June 22, 1957, at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island. Lorraine was a homemaker until all her children finished school. She was a seasonal worker at Fonner Park during the racing season, and worked at Pioneer Seed Company, Sears and Skagway, where she gift-wrapped during the Christmas season.


Lorraine loved her family; she loved cooking and baking for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was best known for her cookies and banana bread. She crocheted beanies for newborns at CHI Health St. Francis for years. She enjoyed her twice-daily coffee club that met at Tommy’s.

She was a charter member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church and a past Eucharistic minister, a member of TOPS for 38 years, and the Sip and Sew Club.
