Carol Middleton:
John is the older brother of our Nicholas Lanier. He and his wife, Sarah Nance (1742-1816) , lived in Warren County, North Carolina, from which Franklin County, NC was taken.

ANOTHER SOURCE:
John Lanier was baptized on October 28, 1738 in Albemarle Parish, Surry County, Virginia. He died in Bulloch County, Georgia. Sarah Mills was his wife. John lived first in Burke County, then Bryan County and finally Bulloch County, without ever moving. When Bulloch County was formed in February of 1796, the boundary lines read: - "to begin at John Laniers, including the same on the Ogeechee River, and thence a direct line to be drawn to where Lotts Creek emties (sic) into the Canouchee River, then up the Canouchee River, to the Montgomery line, thence along the said line to the Ogeechee River, and down the said River to the beginning, which county will be called Bulloch." John Lanier operated a ferry across the Ogeechee River at this point, where the dividing line between Bryan and Bulloch ran into the river.

3. Nancy Lanier, born 1766. Married Joseph Bennett on 5/24/1785 in Mecklenburg Co. VA (source: The Marriage Bonds of Mecklenburg County, VA 1765-1810," listed and indexed by Stratton Nottingham, Onancock, VA, 1928, p. 4). Their children: John Lanier Bennett (b. 1792, Mecklenburg Co, VA; m. Martha Hammond, daughter of George Hammond, Revolutionary War soldier, and Unity Smith who was of Huguenot ancestry to Jeremiah Duams); Thomas Bennett; Mary A. Bennett (m. John D. There is an old record of a Chancery Court lawsuit filed in Montgomery Co. TN on 20 May 1843 and later moved to Robertson Co. TN, that mentions the Laniers. In that suit, John Langford and wife Mary filed the suit against their son-in-law William Anderson Nichols over the ownership of certain slaves that their daughter took with her when she married Nichols. This John and Mary Langford were the John D. Langford and Mary A. Bennett Langford mentioned above. They filed the suit "in the interest of all the other grandchildren of John Lanier, deceased, late of Franklin County, North Carolina, as well as for themselves." In the suit it was stated that Mary was "a grandchild of the said John Lanier, deceased", and that she had a greater right to those slaves than Nichols. There was a deposition in the suit by their son, Charles Wheeler Langford, as to how he came by his slave, Henry. Henry was given to him by his great-aunt Sally (or Sarah) Lanier in Nash Co. NC before he and his family moved to Robertson Co. TN in 1835. John Long has seen the deed abstract in the deed books of Nash Co. NC for this deed of gift to Charles from Sally Lanier.
