Mr. Dean William Donovan, 97, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at his residence at Brennity where he has resided for the last four years in their Assisted Living Facility.

Dean was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on May 28, 1919. He was a Staff Sergeant in the Army, stationed in Brazil during World War II. His duties involved keeping and updating aircraft charts for Army missions during this time.

Dean was a Draftsman at Piper Aircraft Corporation, which had its beginning in Lock Haven and then opened another factory located in Vero Beach, Florida in the early 1960s.

Dean worked for Piper Aircraft in both locations for over 35 years. In 1948, Dean married Flora Beth Harbach in a small country Church in Livonia, Pennsylvania, where they resided for the next 12 years. They had one daughter, Ruth Anne Donovan, who was born in 1950, who still resides in Vero Beach with her husband, Tom Aldrich.

Dean was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion, and often gave the Benediction at Memorial Island here in Vero for Memorial Day Services, as well as funerals or other related services.

Dean was an active member of Saint Helen's Catholic Church, involved with their Nocturnal Adoration Society and the Church Choir for many years.

Dean was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and was involved with many of their activities and services.

Dean was also a hospital auxiliary volunteer at Indian River Medical Center for many years after his retirement as well.

Family members include his daughter, Ruth Aldrich, son-in-law, Tom Aldrich, two grandchildren, Matthew Thomas Aldrich and his wife, Connie of Tallahassee; and Erin Ruth Silvestro who resides in Tampa with her husband, Greg. Dean also has two great-grandchildren, Grace and Gabrielle who live in Tallahassee with their parents, Matthew and Connie.

Visitation will be at Strunk Funeral Home, 916 17th Street, in Vero Beach, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, with a memorial service at 10:00. Interment will be at Crestlawn Cemetery immediately after the service, where friends and family are welcome to meet.

Donations may be made to the VFW/American Legion, 1535 Old Dixie Highway, Vero Beach, Florida 32960.
