Sarah perished in the "Corpus Christi Storm" of September 14, 1919 when she was swept away into the Gulf of Mexico by 72 mile per hour winds and a 10-foot tidal wave that covered major parts of the city. Her daughter Mrs. Leith Prater, and her two sons, Bernard and Edgar, also perished along with 500 other residents. Her husband, Henry Hartwell Spyker, was rescued.
