Frieda May Brown was born March 2, 1927 in Toone, TN to Fred and Willie Moss Lambert Brown. Through out her childhood, she lived in Toone, attended elementary school there and was baptized into the Toone Baptist Church at a young age. Frieda graduated from Central High School in Bolivar, TN and then enrolled in Memphis State College to pursue a degree in elementary education. She graduated from college in 1949. While teaching in Parkin, AR she boarded with the Stewart family and met their oldest son, George, when he returned home from WWII. George and Frieda married on August 21, 1949 at the Toone Baptist Church. They began their married life in Westpoint, MS, but soon George became interested in a career with the FBI and became a field agent in 1951. His career with the bureau took them to seven different cities. Although she taught school occasionally, Frieda was primarily a homemaker. With each move, Frieda made a home for the family, became involved in church work, and participated in organizations to help her children and her husband achieve. In many ways, she was the original “wind beneath my wings.” She was a steady and stable influence in a world that changed dramatically and sometimes dangerously around them. Frieda and George made their home in Jonesboro, AR in 1971. They were devoted members of First Methodist Church Jonesboro. Frieda had a sweet disposition and a beautiful smile for everyone. She gave everyone the benefit of the doubt and showed Christian charity and forgiveness in her everyday life. She especially loved young children and enjoyed watching them play, even as she grew older and less able to get out. She reveled in the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was active in the garden club and was fond of watching the birds in her yard. Frieda was an excellent cook who routinely hosted family dinners and holiday get-togethers. She was also a talented seamstress who enjoyed making fancy dresses for the little girls in the family. After 65 years of marriage, Frieda was predeceased by her husband George in 2014. She was also predeceased by her parents, her sister Frances Wilson and her brother Wayne Brown. She is survived by two children: Walter Stewart (Kathy) of Jonesboro, AR and Rebecca Stanfield (Roger) of Jackson, TN; four grandchildren: David Stewart Altfeld (Toni) of Atlanta, GA, Leah Frances Hubbard (Andrew) of Charlotte, NC, Elizabeth Stanfield of Knoxville, TN, and Ross Mathews (Jessica) of Hot Springs, AR as well as three great-grandchildren: Malachi, Vada, and Adele. Frieda also leaves her loving friend, Betty Grant, who faithfully visited with her during her three years in the nursing home. The family will receive visitors at Emerson Funeral Home on Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 and funeral services at 11:30 with John Miles and Patty Soward officiating. Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Cearley Cemetery, Highway 18, Toone, TN. Memorials may be made to the Jonesboro First United Methodist Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
