1917 - 2007
Graveside services will be held Saturday, February 17, at 11:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. with Pastor Clyde B. Wasdin officiating. Melvin Lester Breckenridge, 89, of Bakersfield, California, died Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at Mercy Hospital Southwest. Melvin was born April 10, 1917 in Gate, Oklahoma and was the son of the late Calvin and Ethel Breckenridge. He spent much of his life in Oklahoma before moving to San Diego then finally Bakersfield in 1996. He served in the U.S. Marines. He retired from General Dynamics in San Diego, California. Mel was a master at gardening raising beautiful tomatoes even in December. He enjoyed fishing in San Diego and deer hunting in Utah. He also enjoyed telling stories especially related to his hunting and fishing trips. Rarely did he miss work, he was pretty sure that the General Dynamics plant would have to close down if he didn't show up. He also loved his Buick's. Mel was full of kindness and warmth which he showed in everything he did. He is survived by his wife Sybil and daughter Sheila Dormier and like-daughter Konny Boyd of Bakersfield; daughter Virginia Fishinghawk of Stillwell, Oklahoma; son Melvin and wife Nancy of Talala, Oklahoma; Robert and wife Barbara Breckenridge of Waterville, Kansas; Ivan and wife Linda Breckenridge of Atlanta, Kansas; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and sisters Muriel Strickland of San Diego and Helen Poole of Cardiff-by-the-Sea California. He was preceded in death by brother John Breckenridge of Sacramento, California and sister Ruth Easley of San Diego, California. Mel was loved and will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank the staff of Parkview Julian for their loving care and kindness during his stay. Melvin Lester Breckenridge April 10, 1917 - Feb. 13, 2007 Greenlawn Mortuary
