The son of Judge William D. Akers & Nancy Matthews , he married Margret S. "Maggie" Dean on December 19, 1895 in DeKalb County, Georgia. His wife and daughter Martha (b-1900) both pre-deceased him. He operated the family farm and grist mill.

The obituary for Mr. James K. Akers from the Atlanta Journal states that he "died at a private sanitarium. He is survived by one brother, Dr. F.P. Akers; one sister, Mrs. J.A. Carroll; nephews J.J. Akers, A.T. Akers, Williams Akers, Frank Akers, S.T. Akers, Killon Akers and S.A. Akers; and nieces Mrs. Frank Berry, Mrs. Ed Goolan of Vickstone, VA, Mrs. Virgal Hooks of Forsyth, GA, Miss Kate Carroll, Mrs. William Persey, Mrs. H.W. Burs and Miss Noble Akers."
