While attending art school, the illustrator/translator Barstow met his future wife, the Baroness Emmulska Orczy (married 1894), with whom he rewrote 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' into a play, after she couldn't find a publisher. They produced the play themselves, to great acclaim, after which the novel also became a hit, followed by nine more in that series, other series, an entire career writing novels and short stories.

Montagu and Emma had one son together: John Montagu Orczy Barstow, born 25February1899.

They were successful enough to buy a house in Monte Carlo, but during World War II, they found themselves unable to leave. Montagu died in Monte Carlo in 1942. The Baroness was not able to return to London until 1945, after the close of the conflict.
