Officer Higginbotham, 23 years old, and assigned to the 11th precinct, was pressed into service for the Christmas detail. While directing traffic at a shopping center, at 30th and Alabama Avenue SE, he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. The hit and run driver surrendered to the police the next day. The driver had been drunk at the time of the incident.
Officer Higgenbotham resided at 1352 Valley Drive SE, Washington, DC. His funeral was held at Hines Funeral home located at 2901 14th Street NW. Burial was in his hometown of Princeton, West Virginia.
