Mr. Joseph Henry Scales, an old and universally esteemed citizen, Confederate Veteran and farmer, died on Sunday evening at his home, "Thornfield", in the Meadows near Cascade on the line between Pittsylvania and Henry Counties in the 74th year of his age. Mr. Scales had been ill for about two months and for some days his death has been regarded as only a matter of hours.
