William (Bill) Tai Apisa, age 74, of Smiley, passed away May 24, 2017 in Gonzales. He was born February 6, 1943 in Pago Pago American Samoa.

He received his Bachelor of Education from the University of Hawaii and his Masters of Education and Educational Specialists from Wayne State University. He served Clintondale Community Schools in Clinton Township, Michigan for 33 years both teaching and coaching. He was also an Instructor at Chaminade University in Honolulu, Hawaii for 7 years.

Apisa earned many accolades during his 32 years of coaching at Clintondale. He was named the Bi­-County Coach of the Year in 1985 when his team finished the season with an 8­‐1 record. Apisa was also named the State Regional Coach of the Year the same year.

He was named the Macomb Area Conference Coach of the Year for the MAC Blue Division in 1990 and was again named the State Regional Coach of the Year and his team was named the 1990 Macomb County Team of the Year. 1991 was almost a repeat of the previous season as Apisa was again named the State Regional Coach of the Year and the Dragons repeated as the Blue Division Champions.

Apisa was inducted in to the State of Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 1996 and received proclamations by the Hawaii State Senate and House of Representatives recognizing him for his Hall of Fame inductions and contributions to football.

Apisa, born in Hawaii, attended the University of Hawaii where he was a standout in football, prior to going to Michigan and landing a teaching and coaching position at Clintondale High School.

Apisa holds the school record of 99 wins at the varsity level. In all, his teams have earned 68 wins at all levels: varsity, junior varsity, freshman and junior high.

Bill attended the Smiley Methodist Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners Aloha Temple, and Michigan High School Coaches Association. He was also a member of the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. The Clintondale Community School dedicated and named the football field “The Bill Apisa Field at the Don Seiferlein Stadium”.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tai Apisa and Laina McMoore Apisa, 3 brothers and 4 sisters.

Bill is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sheila W. (Smith) Apisa; of Smiley, TX and Clinton Township, MI; his son, William Tai Apisa, Jr. of Smiley, TX; four grandsons: Tai Apisa III of Smiley, TX, Koa Apisa, Tui Apisa, and Manu Apisa all of Wilmington, NC; his brothers: Dennis Apisa of Green Bay, WI; Bob Apisa of Granada Hills, CA, Norman Apisa of Aiea, HI; a sister, Esther Apisa Shimasaki of Honolulu, HI; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as other loving family and many friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Michigan.
