WEWOKA - Funeral services for Walter Asbury Billingsley, former state legislator and district judge, were held at 2 p.m. at the Wewoka Church of Christ with burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka.

Billingsley, 95, died Thursday at Wewoka Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.

The Wewoka attorney served in the state House of Representatives from 1941-51. He was speaker of the house from 1949-1950 under Gov. Roy Turner. he was also Governor Of Oklahoma for a day.

In 1975, Billingsley retired as a district judge in Wewoka after seven years on the bench and 55 years practicing law.

Billingsley came to Indian Territory with his family at age 15.

He taught school from 1908 to 1917 before becoming Seminole County school superintendent for the next four years.

He was admitted to the bar in 1921 after studying under attorney Clarence Hill.

1 sister Mettie and 4 brothers Claudius,John and Earl preceded him in death.

Mr Billingsley is survived by his wife, Alice O'Neal Billingsley, of the home, and one son, Charles of Derby, Kan. Alice went to be with Walter May 11th 1987.
