Death Claims C S Barnitz

Venerable resident of the County Board of Elections, Prominent Citizen and Churchman Died Saturday night at his Home

...Dr Barnitz held prominence and honor in Middletown as a good citizen, the oldest physician, president of the County Board of Election Supervisors and Deacon and Treasurer of the First Presbyterian Church.

Born in Hanover, York County Pennsylvania, March 23, 1830, of German ancestry, which came to the United States during the Colonial period, he was reared in the refined environments, following his private schooling with an academic course that fitted him for a successful business and professional career.

Visiting his brother and two sisters, who had then become residents of Middletown, Ohio, his youthful spirit was pleased with the little town and he concluded to make it his home, locating here in 1849. Here he began the study of medicine with his brother-in-law, Dr G E Wampler, preparing for the course he took in the Pennsylvania Medical College and from which he graduated in 1854.

After receiving his degree Dr Barnitz opened an office in Middletown and practiced medicine....

...in 1855 he married Anna L Brashear who was born and reared in Middletown, and seven children were born of the union, two dying in infancy.

Charles G Barnitz, who served in the Spanish-American War with the 14th US Infantry as sergeant died in the Philippines Dec 26, 1901.

The other children are Mrs R M Wirt, and Mrs JP Barnitz of Hanover, Pa, Mrs E W Gunckle and Gardner E Barnitz of this city.

The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at the home on Broadway at two o'clock, with service by Rev WH Shields. Middletown Cemetery will be the place of interment.

Removed from Middletown Cemetery to Woodside Cemetery in 1911.
