He was a shipfitter by trade, graduating from the apprentice program at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton in 1941.
In 1944 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He served on the USS Braxton, an armed personnel attack ship, and was in Tokyo Bay when the armistice with Japan was signed. He achieved the rank of fireman first class.
After the war he worked at several shipyards, including Commercial Ship Repair in Seattle, Puget Sound Bridge and Drydock on Bainbridge Island and PSNS, retiring in 1981.
In 1953 he married Harriet Anderson. They had a daughter Chrisanne. They were later divorced.
A versatile athlete, Alfred lettered in baseball at Bremerton High School and in tennis at Olympic College. At PSNS he was a member of the apprentice basketball team. After World War II he played semi-pro baseball with the Bremerton Bees. He also starred in fastpitch softball and was inducted into the Kitsap Oldtimers' Hall of Fame in that sport. He belonged to the Manette History Club.
Alfred lived with his sister Ellen Magnussen in Bremerton from 1961 until her death in 1993. He continued living there until his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Viggo and Svend and sisters Ellen and Edith.
Alfred was buried at the Ivy Green Cemetery in Bremerton, Washington.
