Phyllis Ann Giberson
March 20, 1953 - May 26, 2017

Phyllis died on May 26, 2017 at home in the loving company of Sharon Martin (partner of 23 years), Mary Freitag (long time friend), and Theresa Diven (sister).

She will be remembered as an Amazon Warrior who fought Ovarian Cancer for 9 years. Her laughter and smile were like sunshine on a stormy day that filled your heart with happiness.

Her passion for children guided her to the field of special education. She retired from Edith J. Hayes Middle School where she was a teacher of children with disabilities. Phyllis also had an appreciation of the performing arts. She was a force in the Lexington women’s community, and was an integral part in developing women’s theater and Lesbian production companies . Phyllis enjoyed singing with Sistersound and New Song in the Bluegrass.

She will be missed by her beloved family; Sharon K. Martin; Michael Oppenheim, Muriel Eden, Cole McMahon; Rich Oppenheim and Bernard Cummings; Joseph Giberson; Brenda Taylor, Brianne Paitsel, Danyelle Hinkle, Katelyn Taylor, one great-nephew and two great-nieces; Theresa Mabrey-Diven, James Diven, and Elizabeth Diven; as well as special family friends Trey Halfhill, Joe Halfhill, and Stephanie Halfhill; Phyllis was an indulgent parent to her loyal and spoiled furry children Mister and Sister; she will be missed by many friends, students, and associates.

Phyllis appreciated the excellent care of her many doctors and their staff: Elvis Donaldson, Marta Hayne, Leo Rogers, and the Central Baptist Cancer Center Infusion Center and the many nurses who had administered to her care over the years. She had been briefly under the care of Hospice of the Bluegrass, whose kind attention meant so much. Special thanks to Sydney Smith, Bobbi Stout, and Kathy Cleary for their extrodinary support and love to Phyllis and Sharon during their time of need.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Phyllis's memory to the Lexington Children’s Theater.

A Memorial Service will be held on June 16th at 7:00 at the Unitarian Church on Clays Mill Rd. in Lexington. Please bring a dessert to share as we will continue the gathering informally in the Fellowship Hall.

Phyllis and her partner, Sharon Martin, have been next door neighbors of my son and his family for 23 years. They were there to discuss current events or help out as needed. Phyllis even joked about having Joey's phone number on speed dial. Her cute dogs enjoyed walks in the neighborhood regardless of which family member held the leashes.

She battled ovarian cancer for nine years. Recent treatments left her with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
