FRANKFORT - Arnold Eugene Gray, 89, passed away at a Bangor Hospital on May 24, 2017, after a life well-lived. He was born on June 25, 1927, to Mildred (Smith) Marden, and adopted by his maternal grandmother, Alice (Smith) Gray and Alonzo Gray. He graduated from Winterport High School, then served in the United States Navy in the Pacific during the final stages of WWII.
Arnold lived all of his adult life in Frankfort, where he was an active member of the community. He served on the school board in the 1960's, and he was a member of the Frankfort Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years, retiring in 2006. He also served his community as a youth baseball coach for many years and started the first Frankfort Little League team in the 1960's.
Arnold was a respected craftsman and made his living doing upholstery and furniture repair. For twenty-five years he also worked in that capacity for the University of Maine while maintaining his own business as well. Customers continued to seek him out in his retirement years and he worked at his trade right up until the end of his life.
Arnold was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis (Parker) Gray, and his three daughters, Dianna (Gray) Soo of Bangor, Colleen Kreps and husband Jon of Monroe, and Valerie Grove and husband Harold "Brian" of Frankfort. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Alyssa Robbins and husband Christopher of Gorham, Eric Ruttenburg of Seattle, Harold "Rusty" Grove and wife Amanda of Frankfort, Pasco Grove and wife Sarah of Winterport, Haley Reed-Hall and husband Adam of Belmont, Lucas Soo of Hampden, and Katherine Soo and fiancé Joseph Hyatt of Saco. He also leaves seven great-grandchildren, Jackson Robbins, Alexander Robbins, Brock Grove, Drake Grove, Autumn Reed-Hall, Ella Reed-Hall, and Natalee Hyatt, and several nieces and nephews. Arnold was predeceased by two brothers, Keith Gray and wife Mary, and Eugene Marden and wife Arline, brother-in-law Bernard Parker and wife Patricia, sister-in-law Claire Parker, and son-in-law Noel Soo.
