George Thompson Allton, 88, passed away on May 20, 2017 in Columbia. George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ellen Allton. He was preceded in death by daughter Stephanie Allton of Springfield, MO and parents John and Mildred Allton of Columbia.

George was a lifetime citizen of Columbia, and unable to enlist in the military, was deeply involved in community service. He was presented with the Alpha Kappa Psi, professional business fraternity, civic service award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the community. The Boone County chapter of the Red Cross termed Allton “one of the outstanding Red Cross citizens.” He served for many years as chairman of the local chapter. George joined the family business, Allton Ford Co., where he worked for many years.

Allton was a member of the Library Board, auxiliary police and Boy Scouts. He was director of the Boy Scout Camp Gravios and Camp Thunderbird for many years. He was the youngest recipient of the highest scouting honor, the Silver Beaver Award. He remained a scout leader for many years, and enjoyed camping and canoeing in the Canadian Boundary waters with his children. He received the Junior Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Young Citizen in 1958 and was named Optimist of the Year in 1960. Allton graduated from Hickman and the University of Missouri with Bachelor and Masters degrees in Agriculture Economics. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi social fraternity at UM-C. Allton was a professional photographer leaving his family many beautiful visual memories.

He leaves behind his son Christopher Allton (Doris Morgan) of Richmond, VA, Jennifer Allton (Timothy Alsdurf) of New Richmond, WI, and Catherine Stelzer (Douglas) of Columbia, MO. He was greatly entertained by his six grandchildren, which includes 2 sets of twin boys.

The family will have a private memorial at a future date.
