Company E 12th Kansas Infantry

During the Civil War he choose to fight on the side of the Union. His elder brother, Hugh Watkins also chose the Union, enlisting as a member of Company L in the 16th Missouri Cavalry. Their younger brother, Zachary T. Watkins chose to fight on the side of the Confederacy as a member of Stand Waite's Cherokee Rifles.

He was the son of Ann Simpson Watkins. His father is thought to be Alexander Watkins. The only evidence found of his father's name is on the death certificate of his younger brother, Cain Watkins, which lists Alexander Watkins as his father. Alexander Watkins never appears on any census with Ann or her children.

Although his stone states his surname is Wadkins he is found in historical documents under the spelling of Watkins.
