Known as "Miss Pearl" or "Miss Hospitality" when new people came to live at the home, she was also ''Mrs. Santa'' on the Ho Ho Hotline and played piano.
She was born in Arkansas but had lived in Norfolk and Portsmouth for the past 60 years. The widow of Hubert Abbott, she was a member of Rock Church in Virginia Beach.
She is survived by one daughter, Zelda Lang and husband "Red" of Virginia Beach; two sons, Hubert M. Abbott and wife Beckie, and Oscar L. Abbott and wife Ellen, all of Suffolk; nine grandchildren, Frances Edwards, Robert Lang, Hope Fowler, Sherry Phelps, Teresa Horton, Martha Griffin, Edna Lane, Selvyn Abbott and William Abbott; four stepgrandchildren, Mary Blair, Mark Harrell, James Harrell and Margaret Hobbs; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Her smiling face will surely be missed.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, by the Rev. Larry O'Brien. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.
Friends may join the family from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
