State Auditor Dies While Visiting At Rock Hill, SC
Raleigh, Feb 10, 1947 - Funeral services will be held in Smithfield tomorrow at 3 pm for State Auditor George Ross Pou, 52, who died in his sleep yesterday morning in Rock Hill SC.
Pou went to Rock Hill Saturday to spend the weekend with a cousin Peter Ihrie, after attending the funeral in Shelby of Ambassador O Max Gardner.
Ihrie said Pou retired shortly after midnight Saturday, apparently in good health. After he failed to come down to breakfast, Ihrie went to his room and found him dead. Dr. WR Blackmon who was summoned said he died of a heart attack.
Pou served in the Navy in World War I.
He is survived by his wife the former Lillian Long Sanders and three children Mrs. Bryan Carr of Wilson, Edwin Smith Pou of Raleigh and Mrs George watts Carr Jr of Durham.
Upon hearing of Pou's death Governor Cherry said "He was one of the most popular office holders of our time. His friends and followers are legion and reach all groups of people in all sections of the state. North Carolina loses one of the most popular, friendly, courteous and capable members of her official family. Cherry said he had not yet had time to "give any consideration" to a successor to Pou.
The funeral will be held at the Episcopal church in Smithfield and burial will be there. Pou was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Raleigh.
