101-Year Old Former Slave Succumbs in Gonzales County

Harwood, Gonzales county, Texas, July 24, Hannah Warfield, who came to this county from Louisiana as a slave in 1854, died here today.
Earl Bouldin, county tax assessor -collector, said she was sold in that year to his grandfather, Gus Bouldin, (Find A Grave Memorial #107561252) for $1,200. Bouldin said she was believed to have been born 101 years ago on July 17, 1847.
She died at the home of her daughter, Mandy Henry, about a mile from the house where she lived for 70 years. Funeral services will be held Monday.
Former Slave Dies Here At Age Of 101; Burial Monday
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Little Zion church northeast of Harwood for Hannah Warfield, reported to be 101 years old and one of the few remaining ex-Negro slaves from the pre-Civil War Days.
She died Wednesday afternoon at 6 o'clock at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mandy and Max Henry, with whom she had lived for the past 15 or 20 years. For more than 70 years, she had lived within a mile of the spot where she died.
Although her early life is clouded in mystery, Hannah was born in Louisiana, reportly on July 17, 1847. While she was still a child, her father was sold to another plantation owner and was killed when he tried to run away and return to his family.
Together with a brother and sister, she was brought to Texas several years before the Civil War and when her mistress died, was sold on the auction block for $1200.
Earl Bouldin, present Gonzales Tax assessor-collector, reembers that Hannah used to work for his grandfather, Gus Bouldin, many years ago. Gus Bouldin settled in this part of the state in 1854 and Hannah is said to have started working for him soon after.
Surviving her are a great number of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
