James was the youngest son of Thomas Beckett and Catherine May. He was born in Daviess County, Missouri not long after the family relocated from Lewis County, Kentucky. On 22 December 1879, James married Virginia (Jenny) King in Clay County, Missouri, although her maiden name was likely Brogdon, based on her son's (Jesse) marriage record.

James and Virginia had two known children, Charlie who was born about 1881 and Jesse, who was born in June of 1885. By 1900, Virginia was remarried to Charles Ball and according to the census, they had been married for 11 years. This would indicate that James died sometime between 1884-1889. It is unknown at this time where James was buried but his resting place is likely located in Daviess County where he and his wife lived in 1880.
