Union Veteran and Erie Railroad Engineer. He began working on the Erie Railroad as a brakeman and then as a fireman. In 1861, he enlisted in the 9th New York Cavalry and served until 1864. After the war he returned to the railroad working at the Buffalo and Allegheny Division.

His parents were Leander Franklin and Hannah (Kirkpatrick) Chapman. Mr. Chapman was married on January 5, 1859, to Mary Williams, from New York.
