Born in Rockland County, New York, in 1861, the son of a newspaper editor. He married Evelyn Francis Oakley in October of 1884 and later edited the Rockland County Journal beginning in 1887. Later he was editor of the Sunday Herald in Syracuse. He became a war correspondent during the Spanish-American War for the New York World. Subsequently he remained in Puerto Rico and was later appointed Director of Charities by the Governor in 1903. In 1907 he published a novel of Puerto Rico during the early American occupation, Patty of the Palms, which reflected his early advocacy for Puerto Rican statehood. After his return to New York (and as a resident of Leonia, New Jersey) he served as Librarian of the World and World Almanac.
