Michael Humpherys Thurman passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 5, 2017. He was born on January 12, 1950, in Afton, Wyoming, to Stewart and Adell Thurman, and was one of five children. He grew up in beautiful Star Valley, Wyoming, where he learned the value of hard work and the importance of family, both of which defined his character.
Michael served a mission for the LDS church in Uruguay and Paraguay and attended Ricks College and BYU, graduating with a degree in education. In 1976, he met and married his eternal companion, Joyce Searle. They loved and supported each other for over 40 years. He found joy and comfort in spending time with his dear wife. He taught elementary school for five years before starting his 38-year career with the U.S. Postal Service. Michael was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He quietly and faithfully served in any capacity to which he was called, including bishop, high councilor, high priest group leader, and youth and primary teacher.
Michael was proud of his five children and adored his 16 grandchildren. He was a master storyteller and loved putting babies to sleep. He showed his love through working hard to support his family and through quiet service and devotion. He loved to spend time in the yard landscaping and taking care of his trees. He was an avid BYU sports fan and loved to take his children and grandchildren to games to cheer on the Cougars. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, determination, love, and faith.
Michael is a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; siblings Stanley (Joanne) and Marcia (Ken); children Steven (Rachael), Jennifer (Tyler) Hill, Julie (Dustun) Prescott, Erik (Alyssa), and Matt (Abby); and 16 wonderful grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; Stewart and Adell; brother (Stewart H.); sister (Janet); and father- and mother-in-law, Harold and Shirley Searle.
