Abby, my maternal grandmother was born in the West Village at the corner of Carmine and Hester Sts. to Anne Doyle (1864-1916) and Eugene McGillicuddy (1853-1888). They had immigrated from Ireland before Abby's birth. Eugene's family was against the marriage because he was supposed to become a doctor and Anne came from a fisherman's family. He was working as a laborer when he died of an apparent heart attack in 1888 at age 35. His family in the US was notified instead of his wife and they took his body and had him buried in St. Raymond's, The Bronx. Anne had to go to work as a housekeeper to support her daughter As most of her jobs were on the upper west side she moved them both to 151st St and 8th Ave. so she could be closer to her work. She died of an enlarged heart June 6, 1910.

My grandmother Abby met and married Francis John Arthur* (1888-1960). They lived first in Brooklyn where their three children were born. Francis (1913-1981), my mother Margaret* (1916-1962) and William (1918-1965). They then moved to Secaucus where they spent the rest of their lives together.

Grandma's health was always frail and she spent about the last 10 years of her life in a nursing home. Grandpa worked during the week in a laundry but spent every weekend with Grandma in the nursing home about 20 miles away. She was critically ill so he spent extra time with her. He was so exhausted he went home, fell asleep with a lit pipe and burned to death. Grandma Abby died 12 hours later. He often said he wanted to go first so he could greet her in heaven.
