The Death of Peter Korth
Shelby County Man, Pioneer, and Most Esteemed Citizen
Portsmouth, Iowa - Tuesday morning, July 4, occurred the death of Peter Korth at his home here. Deceased had been a patient sufferer of several years with diabetes and muscular rheumatism. Mr Korth had been a resident of Shelby County since 1875.
He was born near Cologne, Germany, April 13, 1847, and was 64 year old. He was the oldest son of Jacob and Mary Korth. He was five years of age when the family immigrated to America and settle in Dana County, Wisconsin. In 1862 they removed to Keokuk County, Iowa. In 1875 he came to Shelby County and settled in Cass township and until recently was president of the Portsmouth State bank.
He was married in Keokuk County, Iowa November 3, 1870 to Anna Leinen. To this union were born twelve children - Mary, John, Anna, John L, Gertrude, Frank, Peter, Leo, Jacob, Theodore, Rose, and Bertha. John the oldest son died when he was two years of age and Theodore died in infancy.
The funeral was held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at St Mary's church, during Requiem Mass conducted by Rev Julius Fallenschmidt. He was a member of the Altar Society which were present in a body. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. He leaves to mourn his death a widow and ten children, eight of whom were present at the funeral.
