If she had to make a choice, human resources specialist Carol Crowson would always err on the side of human.

Refusing to treat anyone as a mere resource, the longtime manager in Tulsa County's human resources division considered herself not just an advocate for county employees, but a friend, those who knew her say.

"Carol was always there to listen to people talk about their troubles," said Terry Talent, division director.

"I know of occasions where she opened up her purse and gave someone money to help. It was always as a gift, not a loan. She had a tremendously big heart."

And a fighter's heart, especially where the welfare of her co-workers was concerned.

"If Carol didn't think a company was processing a claim quickly enough, she'd get on the phone and get after them," Talent said. "The same if a claim was denied and she didn't agree with it."

Carol Ann Crowson, who worked for the county for almost 25 years, died Thursday from cancer. She was 66.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Fitzgerald Southwood Colonial Chapel.

A rosary is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday with a funeral Mass to follow at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, both at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church.

Carol Crowson started with Tulsa County in human resources in 1983. She left briefly to pursue a real estate career before returning in 1989.

Since 2001, she had worked as compensation and benefits manager.

Whether helping employees navigate the complexities of health insurance or make retirement decisions, Crowson was patient and pleasant.

"Her biggest thing was people; it was her gift," her husband, Orvis Crowson, said.

"If Carol hadn't died, I don't know if I would've ever been able to get her to retire from the county. Most of us work to retire, but her job was a pleasure for her and mainly because she liked the people."

Carol Crowson, a Tulsa native, was a graduate of Charles Page High School in Sand Springs.

She and Orvis Crowson, a Florida native, married in 1964 after meeting while working for the same company.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years; daughter Annetta Lynn Obermark; son Christopher Lee Crowson; six grandchildren; mother Oleta Hoopengarner and brother Darrell S. Buttress.
