Willis M. Kanagy, 97, of Orrville, Ohio, died July 8, 1997. He was born Oct. 7, 1899 to George W. and Anna Detweiler Kanagy in Champaign County, Ohio, and grew up in a farming community.
On June 1, 1924, he married Matilda Umble Kanagy, also of Champaign County. They lived in Los Angeles and Upland, California for eight years before moving to Manitou Springs, Colo., which became their permanent home. She died in 1988, but he continued living in Colorado until 1994 when he moved to Ohio to live with his daughter, Barbara. Willis and Matilda were graduates of the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles he apprenticed in concrete and steel construction. In Colorado Springs he became a licensed general contractor. Willis demonstrated a strong Christian faith. From a young age he was interested in peace and justice. During World War II he was in charge of preparing the Templeton Gap CCC Camp in Colorado Springs to be used by conscientious objectors in Civilian Public Service work. He was interested in mission work and the extension of the church. International students were always welcome in his home. A highlight was a summer of work on a building for Wycliff Translators in Panama. He was an active member of Gideons International for many years.
As a youth he was a member of Oak Grove Church in West Liberty, Ohio. In Colorado he was a member of the Mennonite Church in Manitou Springs, which transferred to Colorado Springs and became First Mennonnite Church. In 1960 - 1961 he was in charge of building Beth-El Church at 1219 Yuma St, in Colorado Springs and became a charter member there. During his last year in Ohio he became a member of Chestnut Ridge Mennonite Church in Orrville.
He is survived by a son, Allen of Cuiaba, Brazil; two daughters, Martha Ann of Kidron, Ohio; Barbara Miller of Orrville; 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Matilda, two sons, Jacob Earl and Paul, three brothers and a sister.
Funeral: July 16, Beth-El Mennonite Church, by Willard Conrad. Memorial service: Aug. 3, Chestnut Ridge Mennonite Church, by Elno Steiner. Burial: Crystal Valley Cemetery, Manitou Springs, Colo.
