Joseph McCausland was a native of County Armagh (Ireland) and a son of Robert McCausland and Mary Jackson. He arrived with his parents in Upper Canada when he was seven years old. He was to establish a stained glass window company that became well known across Canada.

An obituary which appeared in the Toronto Star on May 4th, 1905, described McCausland as "one of the most prominent figures in the business life of Toronto". According to this source, McCausland died after an illness of five weeks at his residence on 18 Wood Street in Toronto. The funeral took place from Carlton Street Church (Methodist) with the burial at the Necropolis Cemetery.

Another report from the Toronto Star entitled "Left An Estate Worth $51,000" was published on May 30th, 1905. This report detailed the properties forming part of his estate as:

Minister Trinity Episcopal Church, Bay City, Mich., ca 1931. A stained glass window was erected in his honour at this church.
