"SMALL FORTUNE FOUND IN DEAD WOMAN'S DRESS - Mrs James Silverthorne Passed Away Less Than Half Hour After Taken to Hospital - CASH AND SECURITIES IN BAGS - Mrs Mary A Silverthorne, wife of James A Silverthorne, died at about 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the City hospital about twenty minutes after she had been taken to that institution from her apartments in the Chase and Stewart building over the Schlehuber shoe store. Pneumonia was given as the cause of death. When Mrs Silverthorne was being undressed preparatory to being placed in bed at the hospital, the nurses noted her skirts were unusually heavy and examination revealed a half dozen or more salt bags in which were Liberty bonds, bank deposit certificates, securities and cash totaling $6,617. Among the papers thus secreted was the marriage certificate of the couple, dated in 1919, the year that they came to Titusville to make their home. Has Brother in Kansas - The cash and securities were turned over to Earle A Varnum, secretary-treasurer of the hospital board, for keeping until the court shall decree to whom the money shall go, which will probably be the husband as the only other relative of the deceased is a brother, John Landon of Independence, Kan. Mr and Mrs Silverthorne were united in marriage early in 1919, the former being from Erie and the latter from the vicinity of Conneautville. Mrs Silverthorne had been previously married but ha no children. Mr Silverthorne stated to the Herald last evening that his wife owned some property in the vicinity of Conneautville, but he did not know how much. He said that he also knew that his wife had some money on deposit in the Conneautville bank when it failed three years ago. Practically every (sic) [ever] since Mr and Mrs Silverthorne came to Titusville they had occupied rooms on the Franklin street side of the Chase and Stewart block. Mr Silverthorne is a salesman. He stated last evening that his wife was about 62 years of age and said that she 'acted strangely at times.' According to Mr Silverthorne, his wife had been in failing health for several months, but not seriously ill until about a week ago. Because of the queer temperament, he said, she refused to permit him to have a physician. Did Not Want Doctor - 'She told me a doctor would do her more harm than good,' said Mr Silverthorne. 'She never liked to have anyone visit us and had acted in a strange way for a long time. On Wednesday, I saw that she was no better and I believed that she ought to be taken to the hospital. She refused to listen to me and said that she would not go to the hospital. Yesterday morning I saw that she was no better and I called Mrs Stewart, the Associated Charities director, whose offices are on the same floor, and she agreed with me that Mrs Silverthorne should be taken to the hospital. When the doctor came this was his advice the same as on Wednesday. The body was removed to the undertaking rooms of E L Cummins and prepared for burial. Arrangements for the funeral will not be made until the arrival of the brother, who telegraphed he was leaving Independence last evening and will probably arrive here late this evening."
(Titusville Herald, Jan 11, 1924, p.2)

"Services in memory of Mrs Mary A Silverthorne were conducted at the grave in Woodlawn cemetery, Saturday afternoon, by Rev J Albert Galbraith, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church. The pall bearers were James H Caldwell, Jr, John W Caldwell, Charles R Church, J G Williams, Henry W Braun and S S Benedict. Among those in attendance was the brother, John Landon, of Independence, Kan."
